Moon Boots: The Ugliest Snow Boot of Them All

January 5, 2010 • By Erika

Since winter/snow boot makers seem to be competing on who can make the most hideous boots, it’s tempting to just give up and give in to wearing the ugliest pair of snow boots there is.

Many boots were immediately up for this title, but a lot of them were so outrageous that it’s hard to imagine a regular person wearing them (wet dog boots or 12-inch platform boots for example). The ugliest snow boot had to be something that people are actually buying, wearing out in the cold, and offending the public masses.

So when we came across this boot and saw that it’s actually a top-selling item, we didn’t think twice about calling it The Ugliest Snow Boot of Them All. Ladies and gentlemen, the Moon Boots:

Nylon, vinyl, styrofoam and rubber all in one boot

Moon boots had a bit of fame in the 70s when they were first created and introduced in the market. They eventually died an expected death. However, when the 2004 sleeper hit Napoleon Dynamite had the lead character wearing Moon Boots in the movie, the boots once again entered modern mainstream consciousness and enjoyed another brief moment of popularity.

A hit movie popularizing an article of clothing (or any brand of anything) isn’t unheard of. But when esteemed fashion editors at respected fashion publications start featuring Moon Boots in their magazine spreads, it’s time to take notice and well, get scared:

Once this happens, even self-confident fashionistas with their own distinct sense of style start asking: are Moon Boots really as bad as they seem?

Well let’s see: Moon Boots are made by a company called Tecnica. Tecnica is one of the world’s top manufacturers of winter sportswear. And being that the Tecnica Design Headquarters is located at the foot of the Italian Alps, you can bet that they know what they’re talking about when they say that Moon Boots are really made for the snow.

Summary of comments on the Moon Boots we found online:

  • They look dumb but I don’t care what other people think
  • I’m only wearing them as a joke
  • Their pouffiness makes my legs look incredibly thin
  • I’m getting them in every color there is

So what’s your take?

When temperatures are dipping as low as they are now this winter, looking good can move to the backseat and feeling warm take the wheel for the meantime.
